Hyderabad, India: The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered cases against the operators of several Facebook and Instagram accounts, along with Meta India's head, over alleged morphed and objectionable social media posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led NEET paper leak protest.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complaint was filed on 29 July by T Saikiran Goud, 32, a Social Media CC member of the BJP Telangana unit and a resident of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Bhavan, opposite Exhibition Grounds, Nampally, Hyderabad.
In the complaint, Goud said that while browsing social media at around 2 p.m. on 29 July, he came across several Facebook and Instagram reels and posts that he alleged were derogatory towards the prime minister and promoted narratives prejudicial to national integrity.
He submitted 20 URLs of the alleged posts and requested a police investigation.
The complainant alleged that the content could incite hatred, spread misinformation, promote enmity and threaten national security.
He also requested the police to preserve electronic evidence, identify those operating the social media accounts, conduct a detailed investigation and coordinate with Meta Platforms to obtain account details.
Goud further urged the police to take action against Meta, alleging that the platform had allowed the circulation of the purportedly morphed content.
Based on the complaint, Assistant Sub-Inspector K Hari Ram registered a case at the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police Station under Sections 66C and 67 of the Information Technology Act, along with Sections 353(2) and 336(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The investigation has been handed over to Inspector P Jayashankar.
Police have not yet announced any arrests or issued further details regarding the ongoing investigation.
